Technology is paving the way for all different types of new and exciting learning. Getting instructional help online is one of them.
With online tutoring the quality and simplicity of interaction is important.
The tutor should be able to provide directions and examples in a simple, clear way. The student as well should be able to give answers and interact without any hangups.
We’ve put together a list of online tutoring tools you can use for all types of online learning. As with anything, different people have different comforts, and different personal requirements. So we’ve listed a couple of options that are available. The important thing is to find the products that work well with your comfort level.
Simple, secure payment is important. There are several different payment apps available. Two of the most popular are PayPal and Amazon payments.
The most important points of a good payment processor are:
- low cost per transaction
- ease of use
- strong security protocol
- international payment acceptance
- shopping cart connection
- bank account connection
Clear and simple communication is important.
You don’t want be talking through static or broken words. You also want to cut out as much background noise as possible. It should be like you are in the same room as the other person. Having a quality headset that is comfortable with a good microphone is the answer.
There are a few important things to consider when buying a headset:
You will have the headset on for at least 30 minutes to an hour.
You don’t want earpieces that make your ears sore.
Make sure you find a pair that:
- aren’t too tight
- have comfortable earpieces
- include a padded headband
We don’t recommend using a single earpiece headset. You want to be able to hear everything clear without background noise.
2. Wireless / Wired
As with comfort, you need to equate your wireless choice with the amount of time you will be using your headset. Bluetooth headsets are nice because you don’t have to worry about pesky wires. But it’s important to remember that battery staying power still isn’t the greatest. Also the connection can sometimes be temperamental.
If you do choose a wireless set it’s good to get one that has a wire option just to be safe.
Having a good microphone is key. You don’t want your student/client to not be able to hear you well.
Some headsets have a microphone built into the earpiece, but that’s not a good choice.
Something with an adjustable, noise cancelling microphone is best.
Our choice headset has:
- a wired USB connection with volume and mute capabilities
- adjustable, noise cancelling microphone
- double padded earpieces and padded headband
This is important for quality audio and comfort. The headset has an extra long wire for length of movement, comfy earpieces, and headband. It’s a Logitech, which has a decent history of quality.
There are gaming headsets that have noise-cancelling with a microphone.
One of several upsides of gaming headsets is you can use them for several different situations.
Visual and performance is every bit as important as auditory.
You want to have a clear face to face. Using a platform that supports good video as well as sharing attributes is important.
Most computers, especially laptops, have a webcam. All Macs come with a webcam.
If you do need a good quality camera there’s only one brand we recommend, Logitech.
Logitech c310 webcam
Logitech c920 webcam
As for platforms, there’s two ways to go about it.
You need the video support, but you’ll also need simple file and desktop sharing.
Screen Sharing / Facetime
Chrome Desktop Sharing
Chrome Desktop Sharing allows you to access others computer.
Scribblar is the best performing online whiteboard.
We’ve used several, and none compare to Scribblar. It’s well supported, has great controls, and is updated regularly with helpful add-ons. You can upload papers so both users can mark them in real-time.
Cloud Sharing Platforms
Google Drive is well supported, and straightforward. Most people use google, and if you have a Google account then you have Drive. Another benefit is the complete set of office tools that come with google drive.
You can encrypt your files and with Google’s Two-Factor, your files are safe.
There’s also Microsoft’s OneDrive and Dropbox. They’re both good options, but don’t have the added benefits of Google Drive.
No matter which one you do use, backup your files with an external hard drive. Anything can happen with tech, no matter who runs it. Even Google can have problems. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Using a Wacom tablet is much easier and more convenient when collaborating on Scribblar.
Working math problems on a shared document is difficult using a mouse.
Never mind writing words.
You can use a smartphone or tablet to scan your papers or book pages and email them to your computer.
This can be especially helpful when you want to use only individual pages from a book at the library or book store.
It’s also good for getting your students work into Scribblar.
